Philosophy of Packing Light: A Metaphor for the ADV Lifestyle

In my twenties, I worked as a backcountry guide and outdoor educator, leading teenagers and college students on three-week wilderness adventures. We lived out of backpacks, slept under the stars (except during monsoon season), and embraced the simple honesty of nature. Among the many lessons learned from countless hours in the outdoors, simplicity remains the one I return to most.

The Modern World vs. the Call of Simplicity

We live in a complex, fast-paced world. Technology advances at lightning speed, and our smartphones constantly buzz and chirp, pulling us into social media doom scrolls or zombifying over endless email threads. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, disconnected, and weighed down by digital noise. While we can’t all live like Jack Kerouac, we can find balance by lightening our metaphorical load.

As a guide, I watched teenagers discover themselves in the backcountry, far from comfort and distractions. After two weeks in the backcountry a human's biology resets. Every cell in our bodies regenerates in that time, and as we adapt to a simpler way of living, remarkable changes occur. Anxious minds calm, joint pain eases, and eyesight sharpens—freed from screens, our eyes become keener, noticing vibrant colors and subtleties in our surroundings. By embracing simplicity, we reconnect with the world around us in profound ways.

The Weight of Life: Ounces Lead to Pounds

In the backpacking world, there’s a saying: “Ounces lead to pounds, pounds lead to pain.” This isn’t about extreme dieting—it’s a reminder that every item we carry adds weight to our journey. As a guide, packing light was challenging. Beyond personal gear, I carried a satellite phone, a comprehensive first-aid kit, trip logs, participants’ medical records, philosophical readings in tiny font, and detailed paper maps. Add ten days of food rations, a shelter, and a sleeping bag, and my “personal space” shrank to the size of a coconut.

How many of us feel like our lives are reduced to a coconut-sized sliver of personal space? Between work, family, and responsibilities, it’s easy to feel weighed down. As a Midwesterner raised to value hard work, I’ve always taken pride in carving my own path. Over years of adventures and meeting travelers from around the world, a brief encounter with a Welsh bikepacker helped me embrace a new perspective. He was bicycling from Mexico to Alaska on a year-long sabbatical, and we crossed paths in the red desert of Wyoming while I was bicycling the Continental Divide. His stories planted a seed: How much time should we dedicate to shaking up our lives?

Finding Your Adventure at Teton Moto Rally

I had plenty of time to reflect while pedaling 100+ miles a day on the divide. I realized that adventure is subjective. It’s not about how far you go or how extreme the journey—it’s about taking the time to do it. Whether you’re exploring solo or sharing the experience with friends, the main point is to simply commit to beginning the journey.

Today, we’re in a renaissance of recreational opportunities, and motorcycle adventures are at the forefront. As you read this, someone is walking into a motorcycle shop, eyes sparkling at the thought of hitting the open road on a shiny new ADV bike. Much like the post-World War II motorcycle boom, we’re rediscovering the romance of two-wheeled freedom.

While a month in the wilderness may not be feasible for everyone, motorcycle travel offers an accessible way to reclaim that coconut-sized space of freedom. Thanks to advancements in motorcycle technology, you can choose a reliable bike and luggage system to fit any budget. Remember to keep it light. The more you carry, the heavier your load—both physically and mentally. Leave behind life’s stresses, toss your worries to the wind, and let a carefree heart take root.
